Due to the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education's failure to pay subsidies on time, 76 special schools have been closed by parents and the South African National Association for Special School Education (SANASE).
Parents protested outside Khulangolwazi Special School in Durban, highlighting the issue. The late payment has affected the daily running of the schools, making it difficult for them to pay water and electricity bills, fuel, and repairs to school buses.
In a previous incident, in March 2023, parents from 74 special schools in Durban kept their children back from school for two months in protest, complaining about the provincial department's neglect of special schools. Additionally, in April, learners marched to the Premier's office with parents and teachers.
MEC Sipho Hlomuka said the department regretted the delay and promised the schools would have the funds by Thursday next week.
SANASE emphasized that the late payment has significant implications for the daily operations of the schools.
