At the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) World Conservation Congress in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, a vote to ban genetically modified wildlife failed.
After 6 days of debate and months of lobbying, IUCN members rejected a proposed moratorium on the use of synthetic biology and gene editing in wild organisms.
Conservationists from academia, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and government institutions had differing opinions on the wording and merits of the advisory moratorium, which recommended restricting the release of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and gene-silencing technologies into the natural environment.
A proposed moratorium on the use of synthetic biology and gene editing in wild organisms was rejected.
