Lucca, Italy, draws thousands of cosplayers

The Lucca Comics & Games Festival, devoted to comics and gaming, continues until November 2 and stands among the largest global gatherings of pop culture enthusiasts. This year’s edition pays homage to France.

Cosplayers fill the streets of Lucca

On Wednesday, October 29, despite heavy rain, a vibrant crowd of pilgrims dressed as their favorite characters from comics, video games, and films gathered near the columns of the San Martino Cathedral in Lucca’s historic center. They posed for photos and then filled the city’s picturesque ramparts, turning the medieval setting into a living tribute to fantasy and creativity.

A global celebration of pop culture

The annual festival is considered the world’s second-largest pop culture gathering, ranking just behind Comiket in Tokyo and ahead of San Diego Comic-Con in California in terms of attendance.

“French Kiss” — this year’s theme celebrating French comic art and its strong influence on Italian illustrators of the 1970s and 1980s.

By the day before the festival opened, over 240,000 tickets had been sold, marking a 4% increase compared to 2024. As the gates of the old town stay open to locals and tourists alike, determining the exact attendance remains impossible.

Summary

Lucca’s festival merges art, comics, and gaming into a vast celebration that brings together global fans, rain or shine, in the heart of Tuscany.
