Professor Mantas Šimėnas, a physicist at Vilnius University's Faculty of Physics, has been linked to a Nobel prize for Chemistry.
The Nobel Committee awarded this year’s Chemistry Prize for the development of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). Professor Šimėnas spent over a decade studying MOFs and co-authored a paper with one of this year’s laureates, Japanese chemist Professor Susumu Kitagawa.
They explored how “guest” molecules in MOF structures affect magnetic properties after meeting at a conference in Hawaii.
Šimėnas' work straddles the boundary between chemistry and physics, making the award a long-anticipated recognition.
