Russia's Fear of Music

Russia's fear of music reveals a deeper panic — the loss of control over its youth.

Russian rock legend Yuri Shevchuk, frontman of the band DDT, sparked controversy at a concert with the line:

Our homeland isn’t about kissing the president’s backside
This statement earned him the wrath of the authorities, resulting in a fine and cancelled concerts across Russia.

Shevchuk's case is not isolated. Since Ukraine was invaded, the Kremlin has blacklisted dozens of Russian musicians, including rock icons and rap stars.

Their songs have been removed from streaming platforms after being labeled ‘foreign agents’ or ‘extremists’.

Author's summary: Russia's fear of music is a sign of deeper panic.
