Jane Scott, the Preston Poisoner

In Georgian Preston, a shocking crime took place when 22-year-old Jane Scott murdered her parents.

Jane was born into a modest but respectable household, one of three children. Her father, John Scott, was a Methodist preacher and shopkeeper. Jane later stated that her parents had been kind and raised her well.

However, at the age of 15, Jane's life took a turn when she fell pregnant, claiming to have been seduced by a local man. Her son was baptized in 1821, but his fate remains unknown.

Following this, Jane began to drink, steal from her parents, and drift away from her family's faith. She gave birth twice more, in 1824 and 1825, but both children died in infancy.

Jane's actions ultimately led to her being carried to the gallows at Lancaster Castle, where she was to hang for the murder of her parents.

Almost too weak to stand, 22-year-old Jane Scott was carried to the gallows at Lancaster Castle.

Author's summary: Jane Scott's life took a dark turn after falling pregnant at 15.
