Armenia has become the 30th state to finalize the ratification process of the Council of Europe's Convention on Human Rights and Biomedicine, also known as the Oviedo Convention.
The Convention will enter into force for Armenia on February 1, 2026. The instrument of ratification was deposited by Ambassador Armen Papikyan, Permanent Representative of Armenia, in the presence of Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe Bjørn Berge, on October 15, 2025, in Strasbourg.
The Convention is the first legally binding international text designed to preserve human dignity, rights and freedoms, through a series of principles and prohibitions against the misuse of biological and medical advances.
The ratification process marks a significant step in promoting human rights and dignity in the field of biomedicine.
