We shot this at the high school in Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania

As the ‘60s came to a close, the Việt Nam War was heating up, and the flower power movement was in full bloom. Against this backdrop, a group of high school students in Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania, were fighting a different kind of war – one against racism and police brutality.

"You know, we all thought that the hippies and the peace movement were against the war, and we were against police brutality, but we didn't realize that it was all related," says one of the students. "We were just fighting for our rights.”

The students, led by a group of African American students, had been organizing protests and demonstrations against the police department's treatment of minorities. They were met with resistance and violence, but they refused to back down.

The students' efforts ultimately led to the establishment of a police review board and changes in the way the police department handled complaints. It was a small but significant victory in the ongoing struggle for racial justice.

As one of the students reflects, “We thought we were just fighting for our rights, but in the end, we were fighting for everyone’s rights.”
