Stella Tzaninis: The dynamic Greek woman who held Bellarine together

Stella Tzaninis' Dedication to Bellarine

For over twenty-five years, Stella Tzaninis, a Greek-Australian woman from the diaspora, has been at the center of community life on the Bellarine Peninsula. She has supported her community through numerous initiatives, founding the Greek Elderly Club and building a solid network of care via the Hellenic Red Cross. Her long-standing commitment was recently recognized with a Certificate of Appreciation and Recognition.

Her Journey as a Migrant

Arriving in Australia in 1966 as a five-year-old, Stella quickly became an essential bridge for her family and others.

"I remember being six or seven, going with my parents, my uncles, their friends… and interpreting for them," she recalls.

Even today, at 64, she continues her role as an interpreter, exemplifying a life where being between two cultures grew from necessity into strength.

A Life of Service

Stella's bilingual abilities shaped her childhood and allowed her family to access healthcare, social services, and other opportunities.

"I realised very young that I could help," she says. "But I didn’t see it as strength. I saw it as helping my parents, mostly my father."

What others might have seen as a heavy responsibility, she simply viewed as a way of caring for her loved ones.

The Power of Giving
"That has stayed with me until today, at 64. I still do the same thing."

Stella Tzaninis stands as a testament to the enduring spirit and solidarity of Greek Australians, dedicating her life to quietly helping others and strengthening her community with compassion and persistence.
