Whisker Labs launches free tool to track power outages nationwide

Whisker Labs Launches Free Nationwide Power Outage Tracking Tool

Germantown, Maryland-based startup Whisker Labs has introduced a free tool that provides real-time alerts on power outages and electrical fire risks, sometimes even before utilities become aware of the issues.

Utilizing data from its network of smart home sensors spread across the country, the company allows anyone to access outage information through its app without needing a device.

“This data is one of a kind,” CEO Bob Marshall told Technical.ly. “Utilities don’t even know, for the most part, until people call them that the power is out in a neighborhood.”

Marshall emphasizes that sharing this information is vital for public safety as electrical grids face increasing strain.

A 2024 report by Climate Central reveals that power disruptions in the US have doubled in the past decade compared to the previous ten years.

Through the Ting app, users can interact with a national outage map to monitor if their area is affected and track when power returns. This feature is especially important after extreme weather events.

“If you’ve got medical equipment or you’ve got pets, you need to know when the power is out,” Marshall explained.
