After decades of NBA history, the LA Clippers should have realized that the only 40-year-old player consistently performing at a high level is LeBron James. Despite this, the Clippers signed Chris Paul, also 40, expecting to manage his workload throughout the regular season and still see occasional standout performances in the playoffs.
Following the Clippers' fourth game of the 2025-26 regular season, it became clear from Paul's debut in Salt Lake City that these hopes were somewhat unrealistic. The issue wasn't just his modest stats—four points and four assists—but his efficiency, shooting only 1-for-5 from the field.
“Paul's veteran voice and high IQ will be needed, but consistency will be his biggest challenge over the Clippers' next 78 games.”
When the Clippers had their full roster available, Tyronn Lue had one "Did Not Play" (DNP) spot to assign, which went to Bogdan Bogdanovic. However, with guard Bradley Beal out during games three and four, the team was short on guards, pushing their ten-man rotation, including four veteran guards, to its limit.
Currently, all eleven Clippers players are available, allowing the coaching staff more flexibility. This means a DNP due to "coach’s decision" is now likely the only reason a player might not see game action moving forward.
The Clippers underestimated the challenges of relying on a 40-year-old Chris Paul for consistent high-level play, and managing their guard rotation remains a key obstacle for the season ahead.
