The Real Story Behind Netflix

The Real Story Behind Netflix’s New Limited Series

The series dramatizes the short presidency of the 20th commander in chief, who was fatally shot by Charles J. Guiteau, a lawyer convinced he had secured the election for James A. Garfield.

Guiteau’s Role Before the 1880 Election

Before the 1880 presidential election, 39-year-old lawyer Charles J. Guiteau circulated printed copies of a speech endorsing the likely Republican nominee. The original speech supported two-time former President Ulysses S. Grant, but Grant lacked enough votes for a third nomination.

Instead, Garfield, recently elected to the Senate from Ohio, became the favored candidate. Guiteau swapped Grant’s name for Garfield’s, confident his persuasive words could help either man win.

Garfield’s Victory and Guiteau’s Expectations

Garfield narrowly defeated Democratic General Winfield Scott Hancock in the presidential race. After the victory, Guiteau expected a reward for his support.

"I hereby make a formal application for the Austrian Mission. I feel I have a right to do it on account of my services during the canvass."

Guiteau sought an important diplomatic post abroad, but his request faced issues. Neither Garfield nor his Secretary of State James G. Blaine knew who Guiteau was, and the appointment never materialized.

Summary

This series portrays how misguided ambition and political naivety can lead to tragic outcomes, as Guiteau's quest for recognition ends in violence and disappointment.
