Jonathan Bailey was absent from NBC's Wicked: One Wonderful Night special due to scheduling conflicts, with Bowen Yang performing "Dancing Through Life" in his stead.
The special aired on Thursday, November 6, featuring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo headlining a one-night-only concert where they performed songs from Wicked and the upcoming Wicked: For Good. The event included several cast members who celebrated their experience making the original film and teased the sequel’s story twists.
The special, adapted from the hit Broadway musical by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman, explores the backstories of the Wicked Witch of the West (Erivo) and Glinda the Good Witch (Grande) before Dorothy arrives in Oz. In the film, both characters have feelings for Fiyero (Bailey), the new Shiz University student.
“They were trying to move mountains to make it happen,” choreographer Christopher Scott told Variety regarding efforts to include Bailey.
