Kevin Durant was certain from a very young age that becoming a professional basketball player was his only path, leaving no room for failure.
Many young athletes dream of performing in front of huge crowds and millions watching on TV. However, as seen in frequent NCAA commercials, most college athletes end up going professional in fields other than sports. The reality is that very few even reach the college level, making the dream of becoming a pro athlete a rare and difficult pursuit.
Looking at Kevin Durant's career today, it’s hard to picture him as anything other than a basketball star. Now in his 18th NBA season, Durant's achievements place him among the all-time greats.
In an appearance on the podcast Not This Again with Bobbi Althoff, Durant shared that basketball was always his sole focus. When asked about his intended college major, he admitted,
“I had no clue.”
Durant attended the University of Texas for one year, enjoyed his time there, but essentially “majored” in basketball. He then left college early, was selected second overall in the NBA Draft, and launched his professional career.
Unlike most people who keep backup plans in case their dreams don’t materialize, Durant’s singular focus set him apart and contributed to his eventual success.
Kevin Durant’s early, unwavering commitment to basketball defined his career, showcasing how a focused mindset can lead to greatness despite the odds.
