Storm warning in Mass., high winds and snow for some

Storm warning in Massachusetts: High winds and snow ahead

A powerful weather system is sweeping across northern New England and into the Gulf of Maine tonight, bringing another surge of strong winds through Thursday morning. The system is rapidly intensifying as it moves toward the Canadian Maritimes, a process known as

“bombogenesis.”

Following this storm, a high-pressure system moving in from the southwest will tighten pressure gradients across the region, producing strong winds. Meteorologists explain:

“Air flows from high pressure to low pressure. The greater the difference, the stronger the wind.”

This setup means sustained westerly and northwesterly winds between 20–40 mph, with gusts reaching 50–60 mph, especially across high terrain areas. The most intense winds are expected around 11 p.m. in southern and central New England, with possible power outages, fallen branches, and scattered damage.

By Thursday afternoon, gusty conditions will continue, generally in the 20–40 mph range. Winds should finally ease by Friday afternoon, with temperatures dropping from the upper 50s under cloudy skies into the 40s overnight.

Safety Advisory

Author’s Summary: A rapidly intensifying coastal storm will hit New England with powerful winds up to 60 mph before calming by Friday, bringing cooler weather in its wake.
