Aimee Lou Wood revealed that she struggled with body dysmorphia while filming bikini scenes for Chelsea in the third season of HBO's Emmy-nominated series The White Lotus. The 31-year-old actress shared her experience with Harper's Bazaar, explaining how she managed her negative thoughts during this time.
Wood described her approach to overcoming body insecurity by shifting her mindset to focus on her character rather than herself. She said,
“I shook myself out of it by thinking, ‘It’s not about whether Aimee wants to show her body or not – Chelsea does.’”
She noted that Chelsea’s optimistic and spiritual nature helped her feel more confident in these scenes. The actress added,
“The line between me and her [her character Chelsea] started to blur.”
Aimee shared how starring in the widely popular series brought significant changes to her life, including frequent visits to Los Angeles for work and press. However, she found the environment emotionally difficult, describing it as overwhelming and challenging for her recovery:
“I find LA emotionally bulimic, and I say that as an ex-bulimic. It is this super-sized adventure where everyone’s talking about you all the time and you have to talk about yourself all the time.”
Aimee Lou Wood bravely navigated her body dysmorphia by embracing her character’s confidence while coping with the pressures of fame and the intense environment of Los Angeles.
