Outfielder Leody Taveras is expected to sign a one-year, $2 million deal with the Baltimore Orioles, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, who credited Mike Rodriguez for initially reporting the agreement.
Taveras was designated for assignment by the Seattle Mariners in mid-June, cleared waivers, and was sent outright to Triple-A Tacoma. The Mariners had acquired him via waiver claim from the Texas Rangers in early May. A few weeks ago, Taveras elected free agency.
He spent the previous five Major League seasons with the Rangers, debuting in 2020 in a part-time role. While his batting was modest during his first three seasons, he contributed excellent center field defense and speed on the bases.
His strong 2023 season led to a significant role in 2024, though his hitting declined, posting an 84 wRC+ with a .229 average across 529 plate appearances. He did set a career-high with 23 stolen bases.
Notably, Taveras qualified for arbitration ahead of that 2024 season given his Super Two status. He and the Rangers agreed on a $4.75 million deal for 2025, but luxury tax concerns sparked trade rumors. Texas kept him for the season, despite his offensive struggles, hitting .241/.259/.
"Mike Rodriguez first reported the agreement. Heyman, crediting Rodriguez, added that it’s a one-year, $2M deal."
Summary: Leody Taveras, a speedy outfielder with solid defensive skills, is set to join the Orioles on a one-year contract after fluctuating performance and arbitration dealings with the Rangers.
