Customers are being urged to return certain jars of tomato sauce to the store for a full refund after warnings that the products may pose a fatal health risk.
First and Last Bakery, LLC, based in Connecticut, has announced an urgent recall of three tomato-based pasta sauces due to potential contamination with Clostridium botulinum — a bacterium that can cause life-threatening food poisoning. Although no illnesses have been reported, the company acted swiftly because of the severe danger posed by botulism.
The recalled products were distributed across Connecticut and Massachusetts through Big Y supermarkets and possibly other retailers beginning September 22, 2025. All affected jars have a “use by” date of September 26, 2025.
“Clostridium botulinum bacteria can be formed when acidified or low-acid canned foods aren’t properly processed,” the FDA said.
The bacteria release toxins that attack the nervous system and can cause paralysis or death. The US Food and Drug Administration stated that the sauces were produced without a sufficiently tested process to prevent the formation of this dangerous bacterium.
Consumers are instructed to stop using the affected products immediately and return them to the place of purchase for a complete refund.
