Two-time NBA champion Kevin Durant spoke candidly about his complex feelings toward marriage. While focused on leading the Houston Rockets to an NBA title this season, Durant admitted he lacks the same commitment when it comes to serious relationships.
During an episode of Bobbi Althoff’s podcast, Not This Again, Durant explained why marriage is not a priority for him:
“I think divorce is actually more of a realistic… ’cause I mean, the percentage is higher,”
Althoff informed Durant that about 50% of marriages end in divorce, to which he responded:
“That’s not good odds.”
Althoff noted that Durant defies the odds on the basketball court, but the former MVP was hesitant to apply that perspective to marriage:
“But still, that’s like banking on the rest, like, forever though…I don’t know if I want to take those odds.”
Durant clarified that his hesitation stems less from the idea of marriage itself and more from what the relationship entails:
“It’s just like the word ‘marriage’ that I get, but it’s more so like what that relationship is like. Do I want to be with this somebody every day? Hang with the same person every day?”
Although he has attended many weddings, Durant never envisioned himself as a groom:
“I never really dreamt of having a wedding day. It was never really like when I go to weddings, this is cool.”
He added that marriage is not something he feels obligated to pursue:
“It’s not like it needs to happen in my mind.”
Summary: Kevin Durant expresses skepticism about marriage, emphasizing his doubts about long-term commitment and the high divorce rates, while remaining focused on his basketball career.
