You got a management directed reassignment. Now what?

Understanding Management Directed Reassignment

A management directed reassignment (MDR) is not a new concept for agencies, but recent instances have been unexpected, coming "out of the blue."

When faced with an MDR, federal employees are advised to ask questions before making a decision. According to Erik Snyder, counsel with Gilbert Employment Law, employees should inquire about the reporting structure, duties, and job title, as some reassignment letters lack this information.

Ask for the reporting structure. Ask for the duties and the job title, because in some of these letters that we’ve seen, they’ve got nothing.

It is essential for employees to understand their new role, including the type of work they will be doing. Recently, several DHS employees received MDRs with little to no prior notice.
