Queensland Cross-Border Commissioner Dies Suddenly

Ian Leavers, Queensland’s cross-border commissioner, has passed away at his home, leaving behind a significant legacy of service to policing and the state. Police confirmed he was found at his residence around 9:50 a.m., and while the death is not considered suspicious, investigations are still ongoing.

Tributes from Leaders

“Leavers has been a strong voice for the challenges facing communities and businesses along the state’s borders during a critical stage of rebuilding following the impact of the COVID pandemic,”

said Premier David Crisafulli, who praised Leavers for his honesty, integrity, and commitment to the police service.

“Ian earned the respect of Queenslanders for saying it how it was, and always standing up for the police service he loved. He was dedicated, principled, and driven to make a difference for this state. Queenslanders will remember his leadership during some of our state’s most tragic and defining events.”

A Distinguished Career

Leavers was appointed as Queensland's cross-border commissioner in October of the previous year. In that role, he supported communities along the state borders. Before this appointment, he had an extensive career in the Queensland Police Service, which he joined in 1989. His experience spanned general duties, traffic and accident investigations, plainclothes work within the Criminal Investigation Branch, and the Child Protection Investigation Unit. He also served as a trade union representative for police officers.
