Aargau, Switzerland publishes online geothermal suitability map

Geothermal Suitability Map Published in Aargau, Switzerland

The Canton of Aargau in Switzerland has released an online map that highlights the suitability of various geothermal energy applications. This tool is designed to support targeted investments and project development across the region.

Strategic Foundation for Regional Development

The suitability map provides a strategic basis for promoting geothermal energy within the canton. It enables stakeholders to better assess the potential for geothermal projects and encourages sustainable energy use.

Contribution to Sustainability Goals

Geothermal energy, especially for shallow heat extraction via ground source heat pumps, already plays a vital role in ensuring sustainable, secure energy supplies. It significantly contributes to decarbonization efforts, aligning with the goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Political Support and Research Efforts

Recognizing Aargau’s favorable geothermal conditions, the Cantonal Government approved a motion by the Grand Council in March 2022 to establish a geothermal register. This register is intended to map geothermal potential across the municipalities.

Following this, the Energy Division of the Department of Construction, Transport and Environment collaborated with internal and external experts to investigate geothermal potential in greater detail.

"The Canton of Aargau in Switzerland has published an online map showing the suitability of different application models of geothermal energy."
"Geothermal energy – especially for shallow heat extraction using ground source heat pumps – already makes a significant contribution to a sustainable and secure energy supply and to decarbonization (target: net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050)."

Author’s summary: Aargau's new online geothermal suitability map advances sustainable energy development by providing strategic insight into local geothermal potential and supporting carbon neutrality efforts.
