During a Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee hearing, Democratic Senator Jacky Rosen accused Republican Senator Bernie Moreno of "stalking" her staff. The exchange erupted after Moreno admitted to collecting vehicle identification numbers (VINs) from cars owned by his Democratic colleagues.
The discussion took place amid a review of President Donald Trump's nominees. Moreno, a former car dealership owner, claimed his actions aimed to reveal what he saw as hypocrisy among Democrats regarding automotive safety rules and personal spending choices.
"Would it surprise you that I got the VIN numbers of every one of my Democrat colleagues’ vehicles and found that none of them bought any of the additional safety technologies on their cars?" Moreno asked.
He then added that while Democrats advocate for mandatory safety features, they do not choose to purchase them personally. The remark provoked debate over privacy boundaries and responsibility for the ongoing government shutdown, now lasting 36 days — the longest in American history. Two senators chose not to respond directly to Moreno’s remarks.
