T.J. Watt and the Pittsburgh Steelers’ strong defensive effort against the Indianapolis Colts brought pride to Dick LeBeau. This game also marked their long-awaited first meeting. LeBeau returned to Pittsburgh for the 20th anniversary of the 2005 Super Bowl XL winning team, finally allowing the two to introduce themselves.
“It took nine years, but I’m glad,” Watt shared in a weekly interview with WMBS’ George Von Benko. “I mean, obviously he’s a busy guy, but to be able to meet the legend himself was very surreal.”
LeBeau was among several Steelers honored during Week 10 and was celebrated on the field at halftime. Other notable alumni present included quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, running back Jerome Bettis, and defensive lineman Aaron Smith.
LeBeau and Watt’s careers didn’t overlap directly. LeBeau's last year with Pittsburgh was 2014, while Watt entered the NFL in 2017. In 2014, LeBeau served as Tennessee Titans’ defensive coordinator, and though Pittsburgh played Tennessee that season—with Watt making two tackles in a 40-17 victory—they never connected afterward.
“Anytime those guys come back, it’s awesome,” Watt said. “And to be able to be recognized for their Super Bowl is awesome. To just see all those guys back in town and see how tight-knit they are.”
T.J. Watt’s eventual meeting with Dick LeBeau highlights the respect across generations within the Steelers organization.
