Switzerland retains its position as the global leader in digital competitiveness for 2025, outperforming the United States and Singapore. This highlights Switzerland’s role as one of the most digitally advanced economies worldwide.
The 2025 IMD World Digital Competitiveness Ranking (WDCR), published by the Institute for Management Development (IMD) in Lausanne, evaluates 69 countries. It measures their ability to adopt and leverage digital technologies for economic and social transformation.
Despite its strong position, IMD experts caution about potential risks from increasing trade fragmentation and evolving regulatory environments that may affect Switzerland's lead in the near future.
“Digitally speaking, Switzerland has experienced two important developments so far this year: the cataclysmic effects of tariff changes and the approval of e-ID by a razor-thin margin (50.4% in favor),” said Arturo Bris, Director of IMD’s World Competitiveness Center (WCC). “It’s clear that the Swiss aren’t as prepared as we might have hoped to embrace the challenges of technology today.”
IMD notes how rising trade tensions increasingly disrupt data flows, technical standards, and investment priorities—key elements that influence digital competitiveness globally.
Author's summary: Switzerland leads global digital competitiveness in 2025 but faces challenges from trade tensions and regulatory shifts that may impact its future position.
