Daniel Wilmering insists the Newcastle Jets will stick to their style of play but knows they must match the Brisbane Roar's physicality to secure three points at Sunshine Coast Stadium on Sunday.
The Roar have built a reputation as the A-League's "bully boys," known for fighting hard, scrapping, and out-muscling opponents. They have maintained two clean sheets in three rounds, reflecting their defensive strength under coach Michael Valkanis, one of the toughest centre-backs in A-League history.
“They are a very physical side and will be up for it,” said Wilmering. “We have to earn the right to play. We have to match the intensity of any team. If you lose the 50-50s and you are not in the contest, it is hard to play.”
The Jets experienced the Roar's intense and physical style firsthand in a 3-1 pre-season defeat during a friendly in Lismore. Wilmering emphasized the importance of competing in every challenge.
“It was a very physical and intense game,” Wilmering reflected. “We want to play our brand of football. If there are 50-50s to be won, we have to win them.”
Wilmering's focus remains on earning the right to play and matching the vigor of their opponents to succeed.
