China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke with UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper on Thursday, addressing the state of their bilateral relations during a period of global turmoil.
Wang Yi warned that China-UK ties will "either forge ahead or drift downstream" in the current international climate. He emphasized the need for both countries to enhance strategic communication and promote sustainable development of their relationship on a healthy, mutually beneficial, and stable path.
"Both sides should enhance strategic communication and promote the sustainable development of bilateral relations along a healthy, mutually beneficial, and stable track."
Wang highlighted the important roles that China and the UK play for world peace, stability, and development. He reinforced China's commitment to the UN Charter and its respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity worldwide. He also stressed Shanghai’s support for peaceful dispute resolution, global free trade, WTO rules, and stable global industrial and supply chains.
Wang acknowledged that differences between the two countries are normal but urged both sides to work toward better mutual understanding to ensure bilateral relations remain stable.
"Regarding the occasional noises and disturbances, it is particularly important to keep a clear head, handle them actively and prudently, and maintain the main tone of the development of bilateral relations."
China urges the UK to strengthen dialogue and cooperation to sustain a stable, mutually beneficial partnership despite global uncertainties.
