We spoke with Game Director Dave Guskin about the future of Riftbound, Riot Games' new League of Legends trading card game (TCG). Although many details, such as the number of cards per release, are still undecided, Riot has plenty of concepts for upcoming sets.
The first set, Origins, has just launched, but the design team has already envisioned content stretching years ahead. Guskin shared that the Riftbound team once mapped out an arc covering the next five years of the game.
"I think we got up to, like, 2030. So about 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 sets."
However, he emphasized that these ideas vary in development status and are far from finalized.
"Those are like the very sketches of ideas of sets. The further out in the future it is, the less confident I am that it's actually going to be that."
At present, Riot is exploring what a Riftbound set should look like, as the TCG is still in its early stages.
"We're a totally new game, and I don't know that I can say that what's worked for other TCGs will work for us," said Guskin.
Riot Games envisions a long-term future for Riftbound, with up to 20 sets planned, but the game’s design remains flexible as they learn and evolve.
