Two Buildings at Olympia Place Deemed Total Loss Following Weekend Fire

On the night of Friday, November 7, a fire broke out at the Olympia Place apartment complex in Amherst. Fire Chief Lindsay Stromgren reported the blaze was brought under control by 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, though some parts of the buildings at 47 and 57 Olympia Drive continued to burn.

Due to structural instability, fire crews were unable to enter the buildings and focused on extinguishing the fire from the outside. Demolition teams were called in to tear down portions of the buildings, allowing firefighters to access remaining hotspots.

The state task force and other mutual aid units left the scene at 4 p.m. Saturday. Amherst Fire crews remained on site into the evening, supported by a ladder truck from Greenfield. Fire suppression and demolition were expected to finish by Sunday morning.

Firefighters will stay at the location until the property owners secure the area with fencing.

Fire Chief Lindsay Stromgren: “Due to the building being unstable, fire crews are not able to enter the building, and continued to work to extinguish the fire from the exterior.”

Summary: A fire at Olympia Place left two apartment buildings severely damaged; fire and demolition crews worked through the weekend to fully control the blaze and secure the site.
