Ariarne Titmus has shared the one question she hasn't been asked since her surprise announcement to end her competitive swimming career.
The four-time Olympic gold medallist revealed the reaction to her retirement left her shocked. In a detailed interview on the Stellar podcast Something To Talk About, Titmus said no one asked her why she decided to leave swimming while still at her peak.
“I knew it would be a shock to a lot of people. It was quite out of the blue,” Titmus told host Sarrah Le Marquand.
“But I certainly wasn’t expecting the reception I received,” she added, describing the immediate flood of articles and clips online after her announcement at 8 am Brisbane time.
Titmus was concerned that many might not understand her reasons for retiring at just 25 years old and still performing at a top level.
“I am at the top of my game, I’m still only 25, and I was concerned that the wider public wouldn’t understand my reasoning. But I haven’t had one person asking me why.”
She expressed satisfaction with her accomplishments in the pool and readiness to pursue other opportunities. A key moment for her was when she took a role in the commentary box during the World Championships in July.
Her decision marks a significant transition from athletic success to new ventures beyond swimming.
Summary: Ariarne Titmus, still at her competitive peak and aged 25, retired from swimming unexpectedly, noting surprise at the public response and expressing readiness for new life challenges.
