Throughout Dave Doeren's 13-year tenure at NC State, the football program has maintained steady performance, resembling living in a New York City apartment where the floor is very close to the ceiling. Since he took the job in 2013, NC State has consistently won between seven and nine games each season from 2014 to 2023, with the exception of one year. The team never exceeded nine wins in a season, but those 9-win seasons coincided with AP Top 25 rankings.
The Wolfpack have come close to reaching the ACC Championship game but have yet to make the trip from Raleigh to Charlotte for it.
Many have witnessed how persistent but moderate success can lead either coaches or schools to make major changes, sometimes with mixed results. Georgia replaced Mark Richt with Kirby Smart and saw improvement. Conversely, Minnesota dismissed Glen Mason after six bowl trips in seven years, but then only reached two bowl games in the following five seasons.
"I'm having a blast," Doeren said on ESPN's Inside ACCess podcast. "I have four years left on my contract, I fully expect to coach in. So unless they kick me out of here, I'm going to keep coming to work and doing everything I can to help NC State. There's meat on the bone for me, personally."
