Super Typhoon Uwan intensified early Sunday, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA). The agency raised Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 5 over the Polillo Islands and parts of Camarines Norte and Catanduanes as the storm strengthened.
At the latest advisory, Uwan carried maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour with gustiness reaching 230 kph. PAGASA reported the typhoon’s position at about 125 kilometers east-northeast of Virac, Catanduanes, moving west-northwestward at a speed of 25 kph.
“Extreme life-threatening conditions are expected in areas under Signal No. 5 within the next twelve hours due to typhoon-force winds.”
Authorities warned residents to remain alert as the most critical period is expected from Sunday to Monday morning. PAGASA emphasized that strong winds, heavy rain, and storm surges could cause severe damage in the affected zones.
Evacuations are ongoing, and local disaster officials urged coastal residents to move to safer ground.
Uwan’s rapid intensification into a super typhoon has placed several Bicol provinces under the highest alert level, with PAGASA warning of potentially devastating winds and flooding.
