Sam Smith shared that they underwent liposuction after enduring harsh bullying about their weight during secondary school. The singer, who is non-binary and uses gender-neutral pronouns, said their weight was the main source of ridicule, not their queerness, which they could better manage.
Speaking on the Podcrushed podcast hosted by Penn Badgley, the 33-year-old artist recalled that growing up in a Catholic school in Hertfordshire was difficult due to constant teasing about their body. These experiences led to the decision to have liposuction on their chest at just 13 years old.
"I had surgery on my chest when I was 13 years old because I had a growing chest," Sam said. "There were all sorts of reasons why, but mainly, I was just getting so teased. I couldn’t go swimming at school, and getting changed in the locker room was hell. So I got liposuction when I was 13."
Sam added that their parents were very supportive, recognizing how deeply the bullying affected their confidence and daily life.
"They just saw how much it was crippling everything about me," they explained.
However, Sam admitted the surgery did not bring lasting satisfaction, saying humorously that the main challenge remained: a lasting love of food.
"But the surgery wasn’t a success because I just love food," they admitted.
