The Wild scored on their very first shot, setting the tone for a tough night for the Islanders. They struggled throughout the game, failing to connect passes, turning over the puck frequently, and being outworked by the Wild. The Islanders’ lackluster execution and defensive challenges allowed the Wild to seize control early.
“I don’t think we executed well at all,” said Anders Lee. “I think we were clearly off from the get-go. When we struggle to break the puck out and we struggle with our turnovers, it’s going to be a long night.”
The game ended in a 5-2 loss for the Islanders on Friday night at UBS Arena, concluding their 1-1-1 homestand and snapping their five-game point streak at home. David Rittich recorded 21 saves for the Islanders.
Looking ahead, the Islanders (6-6-2) will embark on a seven-game road trip, starting Saturday night against the Rangers at Madison Square Garden, giving them a quick chance to move past this defeat.
Bo Horvat, who assisted Emil Heineman’s goal that brought the Islanders within 2-1 early in the second period, noted the team was outworked.
“I think they beat us to a lot,” Horvat said. “I think they outworked us a lot tonight. We’ve got to correct that come [Saturday].”
Any hope from Heineman’s goal quickly faded when defenseman Brock Faber scored just over a minute later.
“I guess you’ve got nights like this,” coach Patrick Roy commented. “You have nights where you’re on and there’s nights where you’re not on. As a group, we didn’t execute, we didn’t compete as good as they did.”
Despite the defeat, the Islanders have a chance to regroup with their upcoming road games.
