Prime Minister Mark Carney's Liberal government sees the dismantling of Canada Post as a precursor to broader attacks on workers. Daniel Berkley, a postal worker and leader of the Postal Workers Rank-and-File Committee (PWRFC), is actively involved in this struggle. Multiple media sources suggest the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) is nearing a concession agreement with Canada Post, which would lead to significant cuts affecting jobs and working conditions. Negotiations resumed on Monday, November 3.
CUPW expressed appreciation for the mediator appointed by the government, stating their readiness to “overcome the disagreements between the parties” and “secure ratifiable collective agreements at the bargaining table.”
The union respectfully urged the pro-business Liberal government, which supports cutting two-thirds of the 55,000-strong Canada Post workforce, “to ensure that any decisions… are made… with Union input.”
This emerging agreement risks undermining postal workers’ rights while the union bureaucracy seems poised to yield to government-backed corporate interests.
