Nine’s chief AFL reporter Tom Morris has been recruited by Seven after two years with Nine. The Herald Sun reported that Morris informed Nine on Friday morning following a lucrative offer from Seven’s head of sport Chris Jones and SEN boss Craig Hutchison.
Morris' passion for both football and cricket reportedly motivated his move, as Seven broadcasts both sports. This follows an ongoing shift of AFL talent from Nine to Seven over the past 18 months, including Kane Cornes, Caroline Wilson, and Craig Hutchison.
Morris' contract officially ends on December 31. Previously, his career faced challenges after being dismissed from Fox Footy, requiring a break before returning to the industry. Despite some criticism and controversy surrounding him, he has chosen to move on for a better opportunity.
“It’s understood Morris’ love of both footy and cricket were behind the move, with Seven broadcasting both sports.”
“The move follows a raid on Nine’s AFL talent in the past 18 months which saw Kane Cornes, Caroline Wilson and Craig Hutchison all jump ship.”
Some viewers expressed dissatisfaction with Morris joining Seven’s AFL commentary team, questioning his character and criticizing the growing number of former Nine staff on Seven’s payroll.
However, it is noted that Seven is not the "worst offender" in such recruitment practices.
Tom Morris' move from Nine to Seven highlights the competitive nature of sports broadcasting, driven by his dual passion for football and cricket, despite mixed public opinions about him.
