Brahim Kaddour-Cherif, a 24-year-old man, was mistakenly released from HMP Wandsworth in London on October 29 and remains at large. He was serving a sentence for trespass with intent to steal but has a history of sexual offences.
Kaddour-Cherif most recently appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court in September, facing charges for failing to comply with sex offender requirements. The Metropolitan Police confirmed he is of Algerian descent and are conducting urgent inquiries to locate and return him to custody.
Labour MP for Tooting Dr. Rosena Allin-Khan said she was "horrified" by the news, considering the prisoner's "shocking list of offences."
She added, "Local residents will quite rightly be deeply concerned. We urgently need answers from the Government and Ministry of Justice as to how this was allowed to happen."
This incident follows shortly after another case where Hadush Kebatu, a 38-year-old convicted sex offender, was mistakenly released from HMP Chelmsford in Essex. Kebatu spent three days at large before police arrested him in a north London park near Finsbury Park on October 26. He was photographed being led away by plain-clothed officers near a bus stop.
Two serious errors in releasing convicted sex offenders from UK prisons have raised urgent concerns about prison security and oversight.
