Brahim Kaddour-Cherif, a 24-year-old Algerian convicted sex offender, was recaptured and returned to HMP Wandsworth after nearly a week on the run. Police conducted a two-day manhunt following his accidental release from prison.
Kaddour-Cherif was mistakenly released on October 29 due to a computer error that confused his custodial sentence for possessing a knife with a suspended sentence. Besides this charge, he is a registered sex offender, having been convicted of indecent exposure on November 24. For that offense, he received a community order and was added to the sex offenders' registry for five years.
Incredible footage captured the moment Kaddour-Cherif was arrested at 11:30 AM in Finsbury Park, North London. The Metropolitan Police revealed that a member of the public spotted him earlier that morning. Officers responded quickly and arrested him in Blackhorse Lane, Islington.
The Met Police stated: “Officers have arrested Brahim Kaddour Cherif who was released in error from HMP Wandsworth on 29 October. Cherif was spotted by a member of the public in Blackhorse Lane, Islington just before 11.30am. Officers responded immediately and he was arrested.”
During the arrest, a police officer noted Kaddour-Cherif's "distinctive wonky nose" and confirmed he looked "exactly like the person" they were searching for, despite Kaddour-Cherif's claim, "I am not Brahim."
Brahim Kaddour-Cherif's brief escape highlights critical flaws in prison release systems and demonstrates effective community involvement in public safety.
