Former NFL star Antonio Brown, 37, has been arrested on an attempted murder charge connected to a shooting incident that took place following a celebrity boxing match in Miami, authorities confirmed Thursday.
According to Miami police spokesman Mike Vega, Brown was apprehended by U.S. Marshals in Dubai and transported to Essex County, New Jersey, where he remains in custody awaiting extradition to Miami. The reasons for his detour through New Jersey and the length of his stay in Dubai have not been clarified, though his recent social media activity indicates he had been living there for several months.
Brown’s career in New England lasted only two weeks in 2019. He appeared in one game for the Patriots before being released amid multiple allegations of misconduct, including rape, sexual assault, and harassment. The team faced substantial public and media criticism for signing him.
An arrest warrant describing the May 16 shooting states that Brown allegedly took a handgun from a security officer after a confrontation and fired two shots at a man with whom he had fought earlier in the evening.
“The victim, Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, told investigators one of the bullets grazed his neck.”
At this time, it is unclear whether Brown has legal representation, and authorities have not specified when he will be transferred to Miami.
