Manchester United youngster James Overy has earned his first call-up to the Australia national team for this month's friendlies against Venezuela and Colombia. The announcement marks a new chapter for the promising midfielder, who has quickly risen through the ranks at United.
Socceroos head coach Tony Popovic has introduced 11 new players into his latest squad, with Overy among those given a chance after his standout performances at the U20 World Cup. The teenager turns 18 this weekend, adding extra significance to his international debut opportunity.
Overy joined Manchester United in the summer of 2024 on a scholarship deal and signed a professional contract in July. He was among the young players promoted to first-team training by Ruben Amorim before the club’s Premier League match against Chelsea in May.
Shortly after joining, Overy suffered an injury that sidelined him for eight months. He made his return in February, playing for the Under-18s. Since then, he’s been a regular in Darren Fletcher’s setup and has appeared for both the Under-21s in Premier League 2 and in the National League Cup.
“It’s been really hard for James because obviously he’s made the move from Australia and he’s a terrific lad, first of all,” said former Under-18s manager Adam Lawrence in an interview with MUTV.
James Overy’s determination and rapid progress have earned him his first senior call-up for Australia, capping a remarkable comeback from long-term injury.
