The Georgia Southern football team holds a 3-5 overall record and stands 1-3 in Sun Belt play. After a 34-24 defeat by Arkansas State, the Eagles head to Boone, North Carolina, for a Thursday night face-off against Appalachian State, which sits at 4-4 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
This year’s traditional rivalry week between the Eagles and Mountaineers is shadowed by Georgia Southern’s struggles. To keep bowl eligibility hopes alive, the team must secure victories in three of its final four games.
Head coach Clay Helton commented on the team’s recent difficulties during a Monday press conference.
“I know that Eagle Nation is disappointed and angry,” Helton said. “Any time you lose two hard-fought games that take you out of contention for a conference title — that is not who we are and not our standard at Georgia Southern. It is not acceptable and it never will be. To Eagle Nation, I say I am sorry. It is my job to make sure that doesn’t happen and I own that. The energy I have going forward is to improve immediately and address the bigger picture with our athletic director Chris Davis and president Kyle Marrero after the season.”
Georgia Southern’s season is at a critical point as Coach Helton pledges to restore team performance amid mounting pressure from fans and upcoming conference challenges.
