Joint Base Andrews, the military base in Maryland home to Air Force One, was evacuated after a “suspicious package” containing white powder was opened. Two buildings were cleared as a precaution.
A spokesperson confirmed that a building and its connecting structure were evacuated, and a security perimeter was set up around the area. First responders were quickly dispatched to assess the situation.
“Joint Base Andrews first responders were dispatched to the scene, determined there were no immediate threats, and have turned the scene over to Office of Special Investigations.”
According to CNN, citing unnamed sources, several individuals were taken to the on-base Malcolm Grove Medical Center after exposure to the package. However, Joint Base Andrews has not officially confirmed these reports.
The HAZMAT team conducted an initial field test on the white powder, but no hazardous materials were detected, also according to CNN.
The Office of Special Investigations is currently handling the case while an investigation is underway. Joint Base Andrews has been contacted for further comment.
This event remains under active investigation, and authorities are working to determine the nature of the package and the cause of any illnesses reported.
“An investigation is currently ongoing.”
