Houston Rockets star Kevin Durant has watched rookie sensation Cooper Flagg enough to make a confident forecast: the Mavericks teenager is on a path to greatness. Despite Dallas struggling early in the season with a 2-5 record, their young talent has impressed Durant.
The Mavericks faced the Rockets on Monday night, losing 110-102. Injuries have affected Dallas’ performance, but Durant remains optimistic about Flagg's future.
“I think that he’s going to be a hell of a player,” Durant told DallasHoopsJournal.com. “I think that he’s going to be such a nightmare… that… he’ll be considered one of the best of all time.”
At only 18 years old, Flagg has already demonstrated glimpses of elite two-way ability. The 6'9" forward has been stepping up in a point guard role under coach Jason Kidd, averaging 13.8 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 3 assists per game. While his stats are modest, Durant believes the numbers don’t fully capture Flagg’s impact.
“I think that you’re going from in college playing four and five to playing point guard, two guard,” Durant explained. “That’s going to be an adjustment period for everybody. I hate to inject myself into his [situation], but I came in college playing four, five. I came to the league playing a two.”
Durant’s insight into the transition Flagg faces underscores the unique challenge of adapting to different positions at the professional level. The rookie’s versatility and strong performance indicate a promising career ahead.
Flagg’s growth this season suggests he could develop into a key player for Dallas and possibly reach legendary status, as Durant predicts.
Kevin Durant believes Cooper Flagg’s versatility and talent will make him one of basketball’s all-time greats despite the Mavericks' early setbacks this season.
