First and Last Bakery LLC, based in Hartford, Connecticut, has issued a recall of three tomato sauce products due to a potential health risk identified by the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection.
The recalled items come in 20-ounce jars and display best-by dates in September, though the recall notice did not specify the year. The sauces were distributed across Connecticut and Massachusetts through Big Y and possibly other retail outlets.
The recall was initiated because the sauces were not properly processed to prevent the formation of Clostridium botulinum toxins. Improperly processed low-acid or acidified foods may lead to botulism contamination.
Botulism poisoning can cause severe illness by paralyzing the muscles needed for breathing, and if untreated, it may lead to sudden death.
Anyone who has consumed the recalled products and exhibits symptoms of botulism should seek immediate medical attention.
