From the white Iberian lynx in Spain to the howler monkeys of Costa Rica: Why do animals change color?

Animal Color Change: An Unsolved Mystery

Scientists are calling for more research to understand the role of environmental factors, such as exposure to chemicals, in animal color change anomalies.

While some animals, like chameleons, octopuses, cuttlefish, and snowshoe hares, naturally change color, the appearance of a white Iberian lynx in Spain is surprising. A female lynx, known as Satureja, has lost her natural brown and orange tones, but retained her unique black spots.

No one knows the reason for this striking change in coat color, which had already been observed in another lynx previously.

This phenomenon is not unique to lynxes, as howler monkeys in Costa Rica have also been observed with unusual color changes.

Autor's resume: Animals change color for unknown reasons.
