Clarisa Pérez-Armendáriz Receives Kroepsch Award

Clarisa Pérez-Armendáriz, professor of politics, has been awarded the Kroepsch Award for Excellence in Teaching, Bates' highest honor for teaching.

Originally, Pérez-Armendáriz did not plan to pursue a career studying Latin America. However, her experience as a Foreign Service officer in Mexico changed her perspective. Born in Monterrey, Mexico, and moving to the U.S. at age 2, Pérez-Armendáriz felt that studying the region would lead to stereotypes about her expectations.

"I was really upset," Pérez-Armendáriz says. "But then, it turned out it's the most incredible thing that happened in my life."

Her time in Mexico inspired her PhD thesis work in politics and continues to influence her research and teaching. Pérez-Armendáriz's award recognition highlights her excellence in teaching.
