A presentation on the history of the Military Museum property will be held on November 9, detailing its transformation from an ice rink to a teen center, temporary City Hall, and finally, a museum.
The property, located on Stephens Road, was initially an ice rink known as Shakespeare's Field, without a formal address. According to Wendy Richardson, Military Museum CFO,
"It started as an ice rink and stayed as an ice rink for quite awhile until they put in the tennis courts, which I believe was somewhere around 1970."
The building, originally constructed as a teen center after World War II, now houses the Michigan Military Technical and Historical Society Museum and celebrates its 70th anniversary this year.
Richardson will present
"From Teen Center to Military Museum, The Story of our Building"at 2 p.m. on November 9, showcasing her research on the property's history.
