The Lawrence school district has replaced Gaggle with a new AI surveillance tool called Managed Methods, according to Superintendent Jeanice Swift.
Gaggle, the previous AI monitoring software, was at the center of a federal civil rights lawsuit filed by current and former students. It monitored the district's Google Workspace, flagging content deemed a safety risk, including allusions to self-harm, depression, drug use, and violence.
The district had ceased use of Gaggle during the summer, according to court filings by attorneys for Lawrence Public Schools, who argued for the partial dismissal of the students' lawsuit.
