A study by the Center for Climate Integrity (CCI) in 2019 found that
67% of US voters thought the fossil fuel industry was “somewhat” or “very” responsible for the impacts of climate change. After being informed about the sector's historic deception, this number increased to 83%.

supported holding polluters accountable for climate damage costs, regardless of political party, once they learned about the fossil fuel industry's disinformation campaign on climate.
The fossil fuel industry has known about the climate risks of emissions from burning oil and gas for decades, but
evidence indicates that companies have deliberately seeded doubt and confusion to keep the public in the dark.
