The government shutdown is affecting Michigan families, who are bracing for a pause in food assistance benefits.
According to a January 23, 2025 press release from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), November Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits have been put on hold due to the ongoing federal government shutdown.
The US Department of Agriculture's Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) informed state officials that there may be limited funds available to cover full November SNAP benefits for roughly 42 million people nationwide.
As a result, the agency directed Michigan to pause all November benefit issuances until further notice.
